Vision Statement Template
Vision Statement Template
A clear vision statement aligns your band and guides every decision. This template helps you articulate where you're going and why it matters.
Why a Vision Statement Matters
With a Clear Vision:
- Everyone knows where you're headed
- Decisions are easier to make
- Conflicts are reduced
- Motivation stays high
- Recruitment is clearer
- Success is defined
Without a Clear Vision:
- Conflicting goals and priorities
- Difficult decisions
- Frequent disagreements
- Motivation wanes
- Wrong people join
- Success is undefined
What is a Vision Statement?
A vision statement is:
- Your band's aspirational future
- Where you want to be in 3-5 years
- Your "why" - the purpose behind the music
- Inspiring and motivating
- Clear and specific enough to guide decisions
A vision statement is NOT:
- A list of goals (that's a goal list)
- Your current state (that's your reality)
- Vague platitudes ("be successful")
- Someone else's vision
- Set in stone forever
Vision Statement Framework
The Three Elements
1. What (Musical Identity)
- What kind of music do we make?
- What's our sound/style?
- What makes us unique?
2. Who (Audience/Impact)
- Who do we serve?
- What impact do we want to have?
- Who benefits from our music?
3. Where (Aspirational Future)
- Where do we want to be?
- What does success look like?
- What are we building toward?

Using Your Vision Statement
Decision-Making Filter
When making decisions, ask:
- Does this align with our vision?
- Does this move us toward our vision?
- Does this serve our stated audience?
- Does this reflect our musical identity?
Example:
- Opportunity: Play a corporate gig for good money
- Question: Does this align with our vision of "underground electronic community"?
- Decision: Maybe not - or maybe it funds the vision
Recruitment Tool
When recruiting members:
- Share your vision statement
- Ask if it resonates with them
- Discuss their personal vision
- Ensure alignment
Example: "We're looking for a drummer who shares our vision of creating high-energy rock that brings people together. Does that resonate with you?"
Communication Tool
When talking to:
- Venues: "We create vision and we think we'd be perfect for your audience"
- Fans: "We're building vision and we'd love you to be part of it"
- Press: "We're vision and here's why it matters"
- Potential members: "This is where we're going - want to join us?"
Motivation Tool
When motivation wanes:
- Revisit your vision
- Remember why you started
- Reconnect with the purpose
- Recommit to the journey
Revisiting Your Vision
When to Revisit
Annually:
- Check if vision still resonates
- Adjust if needed
- Recommit or revise
When things change:
- Major member change
- Significant milestone reached
- Band evolves significantly
- External circumstances shift
When there's conflict:
- Misalignment on direction
- Disagreements about opportunities
- Loss of motivation
- Confusion about priorities
How to Revisit
Questions to ask:
- Does our vision still inspire us?
- Are we moving toward it?
- Does it still reflect who we are?
- Do we need to adjust it?
- Are we all still aligned?
Possible outcomes:
- Recommit to current vision
- Refine/adjust vision
- Create new vision
- Acknowledge misalignment
