Montevideo is the county seat of Chippewa County in west-central Minnesota, surrounded by farmland and river valley. School bands, community concerts, church choirs, and county fair talent shows make up most local music. Minneapolis and Willmar are the nearest larger markets.

Performances occur at the high school auditorium, community center, church fellowship halls, and the county fairgrounds. There are few regular clubs, so musicians often drive to Willmar or the Twin Cities for gigs.

Local and regional artists perform here, with musicians from the nearby Twin Cities and Willmar scene occasionally passing through.

Beginners should join the school band or choir, connect with the community concert series, and watch fairground schedules. Regular gigging usually requires traveling to Willmar or Minneapolis.
