Alexandria's musical identity is quiet, rooted in colonial-era church music. Today the city sits across the Potomac from Washington, D.C., so most musicians play in D.C. clubs or Bethesda venues. Small acoustic sets still appear at historic churches and waterfront spaces.

The Birchmere, just outside the city line, hosts folk, bluegrass, and Americana acts. Bars along King Street book acoustic duos and jazz trios on weekends. Churches and community halls provide modest spaces for chamber groups. Most rock shows travel to D.C. or Arlington.

John Jacob Frobel, a musician born in Amsterdam, settled near Alexandria and became a music instructor at Mount Vernon in the early 1800s. Today, most performers are better known as D.C.-area artists.
